Development idea
The archipelago of Finland, Åland and Sweden is naturally nutrient-rich and highly productive, featuring a diverse and unique flora and fauna. However, there are conflicting needs when it comes to the use of the area. Therefore, sustainable planning becomes very important, and more information about the special features of the underwater nature is needed.
Aim of the project
NANNUT highlighted the importance of underwater natural values (habitats and species) to local decision makers and the general public.
Main project activities
The project organised a series of stakeholder seminars both for local politicians and other main target groups such as planners. In addition, and as one of the the main project result, the project produced a web portal (www.nannut.fi) containing data sets and maps about valuable areas in the project area. NANNUT also focused on outreach activities and produced a DVD describing important nature types under the surface.

Results
Below the surface - Info material about the underwater nature in the Baltic Sea

The project Nannut developed information material consisting of a video and brochures about the underwater nature in the archipelagos of the Central Baltic region (Sweden, Åland, Finland).
In the video you get to dive into the Baltic Sea with the fieldworkers of the NANNUT-project during one day of underwater mapping. Experts present nature types, which play an important role in sustaining the biodiversity of the sea. In several brochures the underwater environment and its values are described.

Model for mapping of ecological values
Nannut developed and tested a model for evaluating, mapping and scoring areas according to their value from an ecological perspective.
The new system for collecting data was tested in the Central Baltic region and the results are gathered in the web portal of NANNUT.
