Development idea

Young people living in the eastern border zone of Estonia and Finland show little interest in continuing their studies with vocational education in their region after secondary school and are not very interested in working for local enterprises. At the same time, Northeast Estonian and South Karelian tourism has a dynamic interest and local tourism enterprises are in need of young, skilled and competitive people.

Aim of the project

The AVE project introduced high school pupils to the possibilities of taking vocational education and provided them with work opportunities in local tourism businesses found in Narva-Jõesuu and Imatra.

Main project activities

The project created a network for the exchange of knowledge from experts at Saimaa University of Applied Sciences and Narva College of the University of Tartu, developed an attractive and accessible small-scale social vocational training programme and implemented it with the help of local tourism companies.

A social vocational training programme for high school students

The small-scale social vocational training programme was aimed at high school students in Imatra and Narva-Jõesuu.

32 secondary school students were trained by means of workshops, summer and autumn schools, and a number of courses as part of the vocational tourism training programme.

The programme will be implemented even after the end of the project: by Imatra Upper Secondary School in Imatra, Finland and in local schools in Estonia by Narva College of University of Tartu.
