Development idea

Very few of the Baltic Sea islands have adequate sewage treatment systems, causing nutrients to leak from household wastewater, farming, animal husbandry, fisheries and dredging. The energy used in the area is mostly produced elsewhere with fossil fuels, and the water reduction and energy-saving options remain underdeveloped. Additional challenges are posed by the seasonal character of solid waste production and the need to transport the waste to the mainland for processing.

Aim of the project

The GREEN ISLANDS project promoted sustainable thinking and self-sufficient resource use and targets three main problem areas: nutrient runoff, energy consumption and production, as well as waste management on islands in Sweden, Finland, and Estonia.

Main project activities

The project mapped, analysed and evaluated waste, energy and water management processes as well as the ecosystem services provided and utilised. Partners collected new local solutions for the sustainable Green Islands and made them available in a comprehensive format for everyone to access. Additionally, the islanders were also given opportunities to share their knowledge and experience in matters concerning waste, water and energy at meetings, training sessions and through web pages. The most significant outcome of the project was gathering, synthesising and disseminating previously scattered or missing information.

GIS maps of islands in the Central Baltic region

The maps contains information about a number of islands in the Central Baltic sea region

The GIS map covers the islands of the project Green Islands i.e. Ingmarsö, Utö and Ornö in SwedenIniö, Högsåra, Vänö and Skåldö in Finland and the island Muhu in Estonia. The map contains information about the different islands in map, text and diagram formats. The information varies depending on the country and island but is related to environmental issues, often including energy issues and CO2 emissions.
