Development idea
Despite extensive water protection measures, the state of the Baltic Sea is poor. Nutrient levels in the water and sediments are high, and poor oxygen conditions and “dead bottoms” exist in large archipelago areas in both Sweden and Finland. The Archipelago Sea in Finland, one of the areas in question, is listed as a hot spot by HELCOM.
Aim of the project
The SEABED project improved the situation in the Baltic Sea by creating tools for the management of the eutrophied archipelago areas with a special focus on the quantification of the internal load of phosphorus. Project enhanced environmental management co-operation between the central Baltic archipelagos and islands and created scenarios about the effects of remedial measures.
Main project activities
By using existing and new data from field studies the partners acquired unique knowledge and created a database of the sediment phosphorus resources and potential of internal loading from the shallow‐water archipelago sedimentscreated modelling toolsestablished new regional cooperation and connections among the authorities, managers and other stakeholders within the project area.

Joint water quality model
A tool for simulation of internal phosphorus loading from the seabed sediments
The model allows developing and investigating different options for reducing emissions to water and improving water quality. It is a tool for the implementation of different EU directives and directing actions to mitigate the effects of eutrophication. It can also be used in planning and management work by regional and local environmental authorities. The work on the model continues after the end of the project.
