Development idea
Knowledge regarding wood energy, clean technology (cleantech) and its applications is not sufficiently distributed to stakeholders within energy production in all regions of the Central Baltic region. The industrial content of cleantech has developed and there is substantial interest in applying these new techniques. In addition, our transfer to a greener society should also be built on local and regional initiatives.
Aim of the project
The Woodenergy project promoted wood as an energy source. It also increased the knowledge about wood energy, environmental friendly techniques in energy production and various cleantech applications.
Main project activities
The project developed regional action plans and strategies promoting an increased use of wood energy. A number of case studies were carried out in Sweden, Latvia and Estonia. The case studies focussed on district heating, planning of wood energy solutions from a regional perspective, as well as the benefits of co-operation between the industry and municipalities. Furthermore, WOODENERGY carried out market analyses of the potential of woodenegy in the partner regions.

Results
Reports on the potential of wood energy in the Central Baltic region
In 2010-2012 the project produced a large amount of reports, surveys and recommendations that together form a solid basis for the further development of the wood energy sector.
The reports and analyses cover the following themes: policies and planning, business development, competence development, technology and production. Basic information about wood energy and district heating as well as the necessary steps forward are described in the following documents:

Market analyses of wood resources in the Central Baltic region
A market analysis conducted in 2011 highligted the potential of wood products as an energy source in the participating regions of Östergötland, Vidzeme and South Estonia. In addition, the concept of business intelligence (BI) in conducting market analyses was highligted.
The market analysis includes a description and comparison of the existing resources of wood biomass and the energy use in the regions as well as price comparisons. Both reports provided support for the strategic decision making on the regional level.

Support for strategic planning and decision making in use of woodenergy
When promoting the use of woodenergy there is a need for both basic data about the strengths and weaknesses of potential solutions on the regional level and methods for planning and strategic decision making. WOODENERGY produced this support for the regions Östergötland, Vidzeme and South Estonia.
