Development idea

Many inhabitants in the Central Baltic region live in houses built during the post-war period. Many of the buildings are in need of different kinds of renovations – not least due to their low energy efficiency. The maintenance of these buildings is a common challenge for the whole region.

Aim of the project

The ENEF project set about increasing the awareness of and know-how in maintaining and designing buildings to reach higher energy efficiency and sought to support the transfer of innovation into practical applications.

Main project activities

To achieve the aims, the ENEF project developed a network to transfer innovative energy efficiency practices and tools to regional and municipal planners, architects and engineers. In addition, the project produced a practical energy efficiency handbook and also organised promotion and awareness activities for the better use and application of computer-based simulation systems. An exhibition of the models of energy-efficient buildings was also organised.

Handbook on renovating buildings in the Central Baltic region

A handbook presents best practices on how to increase energy efficiency in buildings

The investigation was done on public buildings (e.g. schools, universities and libraries) and private residential apartment buildings built in 1960-1980. Besides energy efficiency the emphasis is also given to architectural and cultural values with the best practice examples from Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Latvia as well as from other European countries.
