Development idea

The Baltic Sea has been exposed to an extensive chemicals use since the beginning of industrialisation, and its marine environment has suffered a long history of contamination. For this reason, the Baltic Sea has often been referred to as the most polluted sea in the world. A large variety of substances exceed the threshold levels set by various organisations and countries. Many of these substances accumulate in the marine food chain and may cause risk to wildlife as well as to humans when consumed as food.

Aim of the project

The FOODWEB project set out to raise public awareness regarding the links between food quality and its origin.

Main project activities

The focus of the project was on the Baltic Sea and its surroundings. The project highlighted and interpreted the relationship between people, food and the environment in terms of not only how the state of the environment impacts our food and safety but also how human activities affect the environment. Through research collaboration, the partners opened up data sources for public use. As a result of the project new tools were developed to combine and interpret environmental impact and environmental risks to consumer food.

An exhibition showing the relation between food, people and the environment

“Aha, Red Herring!” is a completely unique and fun exhibition on the Baltic Sea, food production and consumption.

The aim of the exhibition is to show the relationship between people, food and the environment by using interactive exhibits. The message the project wants to send out to the people visiting this exhibition is to be aware of one's everyday food choices, because every step in food production and consumption will leave a mark on the environment and on our own health. The exhibition is divided into three parts: energy in food, food production and Baltic Sea environment. There are eleven exhibits with information stands and three general information columns to lead in the exhibition parts. The exhibition was open From June until October 2013 in science centre AHHAA (Tartu, Estonia). Since November 2013 it is available for renting.
