Development idea
The competitiveness of the high-tech industry sector of the Central Baltic region is based on the universities and polytechnics providing the industries with the highly skilled work force they need. Studies in the field require a good understanding of mathematics. However, in the last twenty years there has been a persistent decline in the mathematical skills of students applying to universities and polytechnics. There are fewer students applying for studies in mathematical subjects than before. The level of understanding of mathematics has decreased among new students, leading universities to lower their standards to get them through the education system.
Aim of the project
The E-Math project enhanced the competitiveness of the high-tech industry by improving mathematical skills among young people and reducing the tendency to drop out of studies that require maths.
Main project activities
The project developed a new method for teaching mathematics based on a different way of presenting maths called structured derivations combined with a new kind of interactive e-books. The e-books are the first in the world to enable the writing of higher level mathematics on a computer in an easy way. The E-Math method has been tested by over 1000 students in pilot courses arranged by the partner cities with encouraging results.

E-books: a web based learning environment for mathematics in high school

The electronic books contain tools for reading, writing and presenting mathematics and solutions to mathematical problems. Altogether 17 e-books were written and published.
The content has been written by researchers and mathematics teachers at Åbo Akademi University and the University of Turku. All books have been written according to the curriculum in Finland, Estonia and Sweden and thus contain the same information any normal math book does.
