Development idea

By 2020, renewable energy should make up 20% of total energy consumption in the EU. There are significant opportunities to develop new technologies and bio-energy products in the Central Baltic area. There are also good sea routes, enabling the import and export of bioenergy materials. One option for bio-energy is charcoal, which is regarded as a potential bio-fuel that may help in reducing emissions.

Aim of the project

In particular, the BalBic project sought to develop industrial charcoal (biocoal) production as well as the marketing thereof, increasing the sustainable use of bioenergy.

Main project activities

By involving Finnish and Latvian bioenergy operators, the project aimed to reach an understanding of the right raw materials and their potential for biocoal production. The project sought to improve the cooperation and knowledge between local and regional energy producers, potential consumers, local enterprises, universities and research institutes. The project also worked on the promotion of biocoal market development.

A portal regarding biocoal

The Biocoal Portal service enables bioenergy users, producers and actors to meet.

The service includes a Biocoal Simulator which is a map application where the user for example can view the forest resources and logging options of registered operators in a selected area. Biocoal Portal- Public tool for Bioenergy operators to increase the use of bioenergy
