Development idea

Use of a variety of biomass sources is important to diversify the supply of energy. Due to the lack of compatible maps of available resources, competence tools for determining the correct usage, as well as guidelines for decision makers, the biomass market is still fragmented, impeding export and import opportunities in the region.

Aim of the project

The PURE BIOMASS project set out to enhance public understanding with regard to the economic and technical benefits of the use of biomass for energy production, based on studies of biomass availability, the techno-economic aspects and environmental protection.

Main project activities

The partners from Latvia and Finland worked jointly to evaluate all available biomass in the project region. They created biomass resource maps by using satellite methods as well as a model of energy supply and demand to understand the fossil fuel replacement costs with biomass. Resource competence tools were created to support the model’s implementation. Additionally, other regionally available biomass resource types were tested in order to determine their technical-economic parameters. The project promoted biomass as a technically, economically and environmentally friendly energy source, including detailed guidelines for financial/economic calculations.
