Development idea
Sport brings people together, helps people to stay healthy in today’s sedentary life style, and plays an ever increasing role in the economy. However, the inadequate quality of sports education programmes, and the need to promote ”dual careers”, i.e the possibilities to combine sports and civilian careers, need to be addressed jointly. The lack of cooperation between sports organisations in the Central Baltic region is also a challenge.
Aim of the project
SPORTSSOCIETY enhanced the competence of staff in the sports sector (LV, EE, FI). At the same time the project strengthened the networks and co-operation between the partner organisations. It also promoted the contacts between young athletes in the partcipating regions in a concrete manner. Furthermore, the project improved the capacity of the partner organisations to arrange bigger sports events.
Main project activities
SPORTSSOCIETY organised a series of training events for coaches. At the events, different training and education methods were presented at joint workshops and practical trainings of athletes. A network of sports medicine specialists was established in order to improve sports-based rehabilitation systems. In addition, a ”dual career” programme for young athletes was developed, Finally, the representation of Estonian, Latvian and Finnish sports organisations at international sports organisations was enhanced.

Results
Survey of the possibilities to integrate sports and civilian careers (dual career)

The project carried out a survey among both active athletes and athletes that have ended their careers (N=942) in Latvia, Estonia and Finland.
The survey included basic questions about the athletes' sports activities, time spent on sports and work or studies, the level of training, the type of support provided by coaches, overall financial situation, educational background etc. The results of the survey will be used when developing dual career programmes for athletes in LV, EE and FI.
Exercise scheme for prevention and rehabilitation of sports injuries

The project facilitated the exchange of know-how and expertise regarding prevention and rehabilitation of sports injuries. An exercise scheme including descriptions of the most common injuries and the exercises needed in order to prevent or rehabilitate the injuries was compiled.
