Development idea

The structure of economic life has changed. The market economy with new technology has ignored traditional methods and local materials and production has transferred out of Europe. Our surroundings are full of renewable natural resources, i.e. materials coming from plants, animals or the ground, which can be used in a versatile manner.

Aim of the project

The ProNatMat project set out to increase the use of local natural material in Finland and Estonia by finding ways to replace materials that are not ecological or have been imported from far away. The focus was on raising awareness and spreading know-how in the use of healthier materials as well as on the environmental importance of using local materials. This can provide employment opportunities and preserve cultural heritage.

Main project activities

In collaboration with each other, the partners sought new ideas and solutions for a market of natural materials. By creating a database, knowledge about old and new techniques, materials and ideas was able to be gathered and stored in various formats such as short educational films. Furthermore, the project carried out training for experts and the public to increase awareness among all population groups.

Website with a databank about natural materials and techniques on how to use them

A collection of information related to old and new techniques of using natural materials.

The project has gathered, produced and stored knowledge about old and new techniques of using natural materials, including information from experts in the field. The portal helps natural material and restoration experts in networking. The growing awareness and increasing possibilities to use the local natural materials create demand for the market and potential for a new entrepreneurship. The databank also includes short educational films about natural materials and traditions.
