Development idea

Climate change, the replacement of fossil fuels and different waste problems demand solutions. At the same time, both Estonia and Finland face a difficult economic situation with growing unemployment.

Aim of the project

The W-Fuel project combined waste, energy and traffic solutions in order to decrease emissions, costs and the use of materials. At the same time, the project promoted regional businesses and employment in waste treatment and energy production.

Main project activities

Six case areas in southern Finland and northern Estonia were selected. In these areas, the project created readiness to promote waste and sludge prevention, start biogas production and use biogas as traffic fuel. The project started out by gathering information about regional waste, sludge, manure and green mass streams. On the basis of the information gathered, researchers analysed the biogas potential and prerequisites of each region. Furthermore, researchers compared environmental, economic and other regional effects of different options. By having developed research based feasibility plans, the project partners can provide tools for public and private companies, administration, NGOs and research institutes.

Results

Study on waste and sludge prevention and the potential for biogas production in Finland and Estonia

The study reports analyse the potential of using biowaste for energy production in six case regions in Estonia and Finland.

In Finland, the study was made for one scenario for four different regions (Turku, Salo, Helsinki, Kymenlaakso). In Estonia, three scenarios were made for two different regions (Harju, Lääne-Viru).

Regional reports of producing and using biogas

Regional reports of producing and using biogas from source separated municipal and industrial biowaste, sludge, manure and field biomasses in the six case areas.

The analysis of possible biogas production and usage were made in six regions during the project. Also the potential biogas plant locations were analysed based on the location of biomass in each case region. In addition, the calculations related to the environmental affects are analysed and included to the reports.
