Development idea
The population is aging rapidly and the social sector is facing numerous challenges as a result in Estonia and Finland. One of the most serious problems that may arise with aging is impairment due to dementia. It is currently an incurable condition, but methods exist to slow down the process. Nevertheless, the relatives of seniors citizens with memory problems frequently do not know where to seek help, and physicians as well as other supportive municipal workers are in many cases relatively uninformed themselves. Unfortunately, no overall analysis has been made of the current situation of dementia treatment in the countries concerned.
Aim of the project
The ELDEM project sought to raise awareness in Estonia and Finland regarding dementia and provided suggestions and guidance for the authorities and social workers as well as families concerning how to take care of patients affected by this condition.
Main project activities
To achieve the project aims, a survey was conducted with regard to the situation of the elderly with dementia in Estonia and Finland, and a set of suggestions based on research was provided. A study book in Estonian and Finnish was also published as part of the project, and training was provided for 60 social workers in Estonia and Finland. In addition, an easily readable handbook for the relatives of the elderly with dementia has been distributed.

Results
Survey reports on taking care of elderly with memory disorders
Problems of the elderly with memory disorders (incl. dementia) were analysed in Estonia and Finland.
Two survey reports were compiled based on an analysis of the problems and interviews of the focus groups, e.g. social workers in municipalities and relatives of the elderly with dementia. The surveys were carried out in both countries.
