Development idea

Modern farms consume a lot of fossil energy in agricultural production and release considerable emissions into the air and water. The use of fossil energy could in many cases be replaced by bioenergy produced by the farms themselves. With better nutrient cycling (for example, the better use of waste) and proper plant species (for example, using nitrogen-fixing plants and cover crops), inorganic fertiliser usage can be replaced.

Aim of the project

This project generated designs and highlighted farms which consumed minimal fossil energy and produced as little pollution as possible. The farms produced food for humans and feed for animals as well as bio-energy for consumption.

Main project activities

An essential part of the project was to choose working farms in Estonia and Finland with various production lines for case studies. By analysing their energy balance and greenhouse gas effects, energy-efficient and low-emission production systems were able to be introduced. These methods were demonstrated to the public, and the tools developed during the project were transferred to education and advisory systems.
